Check Kingston off the List!
Brian and I waked 6.75 miles through the City of Kingston which surely was a change of pace on the trail. For the most part we walked along city streets and a few parks and only at the end did we hit the very nice Kingston Point Rail Trail which ran right along the Hudson River. There wasn't too much by way of scenery and we tried to catch a little local flavor in the shops and streets. I sat in Cinderella's Coach, we stopped on Wall Street (not really), we came across a film shoot for an Apple TV program and saw the last remaining PT Boat that saw action in the Pacific theatre during WWII. The weather was terrific and we clicked off the miles at a good pace.
A wonderful suggestion came from my lovely sister-in-law Trisha who asked we include more information on Feeding America in the daily blog updates and I love that idea. So here below is some general bullets on hunger in America and why we are making this walk. Every day I will try to sprinkle a little more about the cause in our blog. Thanks Trish!
Hunger in America
Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day.
Due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 42 million people may experience food insecurity, including a potential 13 million children.
The pandemic has most impacted families that were already facing hunger or one paycheck away from facing hunger.
According to the USDA's latest Household Food Insecurity in the United States report, more than 35 million people in the United States struggled with hunger in 2019.
Households with children are more likely to experience food insecurity. Before the coronavirus pandemic, more than 10 million children live in food-insecure households.
Every community in the country is home to families who struggle with food insecurity including rural and suburban communities.
Many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs and need to rely on their local food banks and other hunger relief organizations for support.
